Titi Adeoye is an actress and movie producer. She cut her acting teeth under the tutelage of Bolaji Amusan, aka Mr Latin and has steadily built up a reputation for herself as a competent role interpreter. She talks about her beginnings, personal production and aspirations in this interview with WILFRED GEORGE. Excerpts:
How do you feel about your recent nomination as ‘Wave Making Actress of the Year’?
Being nominated for awards is a big deal for me. Nomination of any kind is a form of appreciation and makes me feel good and encouraged. It shows people appreciate my craft and I am so happy about that.
How did you develop a flair for acting?
It is a natural talent from God. Acting is second nature for me and I can play any role spontaneously. Like every talent, I have honed my skills working alongside veterans in the industry and through role play at home.
What prompted you into the entertainment industry?
I joined the entertainment industry in order to use my God-given talent to entertain and educate people through the various movies I participate in.
How did your family react to your decision to become an actress?
My mum initially opposed my acting career due to misconceptions about actresses. However, my dad was very understanding and supported me materially and emotionally. Having gone this far, I must say all members of my family are very supportive.

Who is your role model in the industry?
I admire any person who knows how to interpret roles and act them well. Acting involves working as a team and I tend to appreciate people with good attitude, team spirit and excellent relationship skills.
Tell me some of the movies you have featured in and have you produced any?
I have featured in many but I will mention just a few, including ‘Baba Eleran in London’ by my boss and the incumbent president of the Theatre Arts and Motion Picture Producers Association of Nigeria, (TAMPAN), Otunba Bolaji Amusan (Mr. Latin) ‘TeweTegbo’ by Wale Akorede (Okunnu) and ‘Amuda ati Jegede’ by Monsuru Ijayegbemi.
I have produced my own movie titled ‘Pero’ about the travails of a single mother who went through the agony of neglect and how poorly single mothers are treated in the society despite our advancement.It’s presently showing on YouTube.Another entitled ‘Scuffle’ will be out soon.
Can you recall the year you had your first movie role and the title?
It was in 2007 when I joined Mr. Latin’s Theatre Group in Abeokuta, Ogun State. He allowed me play the role of an agent in ‘Baba Eleran in London’. It was a big deal for me at that time.
How would you describe your experience so far?
All I will say is hard work and perseverance pay. I keep improving and being creative. I also practice and see every opportunity to make a difference.
What makes Titilayo different and unique from others in the movie industry?
I realise every person is unique based on his or her abilities. I can play multiple characters and roles. I love working and learning from established actors and actresses which helps to improve my ability to play many roles. I love acting because it’s my passion. Loving what you do will always bring out the best in you.
What were the initial challenges you faced and how did you overcome them?
The only challenge for me was lack of opportunities to prove my abilities but as I persevered and turned up at locations timely, each role assigned was done perfectly. My confidence in myself increased and that was how I got other opportunities to showcase my God-given talent.
How do you think the government can intervene meaningfully in the entertainment industry?
Government should release enough grants that will help filmmakers bring their stories to life. I would like to see government invest in film institutes that will teach aspiring filmmakers, directors and actors more about their craft. More cinemas should be built by government and private investors so that many Nigerians can benefit from the magical world of movies.
What are your fond memories of your growing-up years?
I have very fond memories of my father who, as a businessman, was engaged in several businesses and I joined in some. I learnt about trading and dealing with people during this time. I’m also very fond of my mum who has provided me with strong mental support as a child.
What do you do for leisure?
I read books, listen to music, watch movies and play games in my leisure hours. I use my leisure to relax and also gain more knowledge.
Your choice of vacation spot?
My ideal vacation spot is a place where I can relax in a natural setting to rejuvenate my mind and gain inspiration.
Your turn-offs?
I hate laziness, indiscipline and dishonesty. I believe in loyalty and commitment to agreements. I like the saying “what is worth doing is worth doing well”
What are your aspirations?
I aspire to bring out the best of my talents to make a positive impact on the society. There is so much unhappiness and I want to give joy and happiness to viewers using my talents. I realised I have incredible fans and want to make sure I raise my game by improving my performances on set.
