‘I feed my husband, bought him a car, but he still planned to kill me’

A civil servant, Mrs Esther Anaagu, has dragged her husband, Emmanuel, before a Jikwoyi Customary Court, Abuja, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), for allegedly attempting to poison and kill her.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the petitioner, a resident of Ajata, stated this in the divorce petition she filed against her husband before the court.

“I can’t continue to live under the same roof with this man. He wants to kill me. One day, as I entered the room, I saw him with my drinking water.

“He was shaking it, as if he was mixing something. But it didn’t occur to me that he was trying to poison me, until one day I caught him adding a white substance into my water.

“When I confronted him, he said it was nothing. I suspected that my husband is trying to kill me slowly. It is on this ground that I want to get a divorce,” she said.

The petitioner also told the court that her husband has no tangible means of livelihood.

“I am the one catering for the family needs.  Even the car he is using for transportation was bought by me. So why is he trying to kill me,” she asked.

The respondent, Emmanuel, who is a taxi driver, denied the allegations.

The presiding judge, Labaran Gusau, advised the couple to explore all the available means of settlement for the sake of their children.

He, however, adjourned the case.
