I did not kill my husband, we loved each other, wife tells court

THE alleged killer-wife, Maryam Sanda, of the son of former National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Dr Haliru Bello, on Wednesday, told a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) that she did not kill her husband, Bilyaminu Bello with tears in her eyes.
Sanda was dragged by the FCT Commissioner of Police before Justice Yusuf Halilu, sitting at Maitama, Abuja, for allegedly killing the late Bilyaminu in the residence at Wuse II in Abuja on the night of November 18, 2017 by stabbing him with a knife and dangerous objects.
The defendant was charged with a count charge bordering on culpable homicide punishable with death. An offence said to be contrary to the provision of Section 221 of the Penal Code.
She was arraigned alongside her mother, Maimuna Aliyu; brother, Aliyu Sanda and housemaid, Sadiya Aminu.
Her co-defendants were charged with concealment of evidence by cleaning the blood of the late Bilyaminu from the scene of the crime. They were charged under Section 167 of the Penal Code.
Sanda, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge preferred against her by the police.
She was on April 4 ordered by the court to open her defence in a ruling on a no-case submission filed on her behalf by her counsel, Olusegun Jolaawo SAN.
The court, however, discharged and acquitted the three other defendants.
At the resumed hearing of the case today, Sanda denied killing the late Bilyaminu, saying that even though they had their differences in the course of their two-year marriage, she would not have done such a thing.
“My Lord, I did not kill my husband. I would not have done such a thing. We loved each other despite our differences,” Sanda told the court while testifying as the second defence witness (DW2).
She informed the court that on November 18, 2017, she asked to use her late husband’s phone to make a call, adding that she discovered a nude picture of a lady on the phone.
“I took his phone to make a call. When I went to make the call, I saw a nude picture sent to him by another girl. I went downstairs and called my husband so that we can talk about it.
“He followed me. It (the issue) became an argument and he was screaming.”
