‘How I am changing lives with photography ’

Published by

David Adelakun is passionate about the arts and photography. In this interview with ROTIMI IGE, he talks about his mission to create long
lasting impressions via his camera.

 Background

I am David Toluwalase Adelakun, first of two boys to Bishop Taiwo Adelakun. I am a graduate of Computer Engineering from Covenant University and a Diploma in HBX Core from Harvard Business School Online program. My primary education was in Victory Christian Academy and Secondary education at Shalom Christian College, Ibadan.

Love for photography

I started media generally at my church when I was in my senior secondary school with the media department. During my second year in university, I got my first camera as a gift from my aunty  (Shout out to Aunty Tinu Ayanniyi) and my mother. That is how the journey of photography and videography started for me. My passion for creating things, which informed my discussion to study engineering gravitated to photography and videography, immediately.

Uniqueness in my imagery

I soon realised in school that my images portrayed a certain feeling of elegance and class every time people gave me feedback. Then it occurred to me that what we see shapes the way we think or perceive a thing. Then the greater purpose hit me. I want to use media as tool for educating people and restructuring their mindset. I believe education is key to solving the problems in africa and not necessarily western education but education that helps me solve the problems i am going through in my community and the most effective way is outside the formal education which is media.

My new studio

My new studio to a blend of style and functionality. We want to give our clients the utmost comfort while trying to create memories of them and theirs families in pictures. It is also a space that allows creatives in fashion, music, and art generally create. You should pay a visit to get the feel of what i am talking about.

How I intend to change the ‘Ibadan’ narrative

I have lived in Ibadan all my life and I have seen a crop of people standing up to kick mediocrity in different fields. I salute their courage and it is also due to the fact that many people in Ibadan too want to get value for their money. So, this new studio is my own way of saying many of us photographers can’t stick mediocrity and will give you more value than we will ever charge you.

Other projects

I am an entrepreneur not just an artist so i am working on few other start-ups. One is called VOOM, which is a logistics company. That brand is so special to me because the opportunities are endless in Africa and also working a boutique service apartment coming in 2018.

How I relax

I love watching TV but a lot of business news and technology developments around the world. If I am not watching TV then I want to cook something creative and new. I am qualified as a foodie.
