Kelvyn Boy is a fast rising music artiste out of Ghana with the world in his focus. Set to dominate the music scene with his unique sound, he told ROTIMI IGE his plans for a take-over.
Tell us a bit about your early years?
I am a native of Assin Fosu in Ghana. I started my early life in Kumasi, where I ended up singing in churches and funerals till I discovered myself as the artiste that I am today. I was a lead singer for various bands until I decided to become a recording artiste
How did music start for you?
It started with me singing in the church then I later joined performing bands in Kumasi and Accra.
What peculiar challenges did you face as a musician in/from Ghana?
It has to be acceptance because of my kind of sound but my people are used to it now and they love it.
Do you feel that Nigerian artistes pose a threat or overshadow their colleagues from other countries?
I will not say that they are a threat. It is simply because they tackle the business and marketing bit of the music properly hence the supposed dominance.
How do you feel African artistes can collaborate for a better industry?
We need to open up and embrace one another. No man is an island. We are one people, one Africa.
Critics say that categorisation of African music remains one of the problems militating against our artistes winning major awards in world. Do you agree?
Well, the mother of all categories from Africa is Afrobeats/Afropop. That is what we are known for. So, I think that we need to focus more on it and then keep pushing it further. This way, we will receive even more accolades.
What do you think needs to be done to solve this problem?
In my opinion, put all categories under one mother category and push it collectively.
You have shared stages with some of the biggest names across the world. How do all these influence your music?
It inspires me to polish my skills and then work harder to become one of the biggest names in the world too.
What’s next for you?
All I want now is to take my music to the world stage and compete globally.
HipLife seems the main stay for Ghanaian music. Are you working on a unique sound and what is your unique selling point as an artiste from Ghana?
My sound is Afrofusion /Afrobeat/Afropop. My unique selling point is my talent/voice. Also, my unique fashion style and my stage performances.
