My husband beats me till I fainted, woman tells court

Published by

“All I have ever desired was a blissful marriage. As much as I tried to make ours work, my husband kept frustrating  me.”

These were the words of Titilope Raji, before a customary court in Ibadan, Oyo State.

“I have been married to my husband for eight years and we are blessed with three children, but the eight years have been hell.

“My husband proves to be a man by beating me every now and then.

“He doesn’t leave feeding allowance and feels good about it.  He’s also not bothered about our children’s education. I have been solely responsible for their school fees, Titilope stated

“My husband refused to let me work early in our marriage while his salary wasn’t enough to take us through the month.  It took the intervention of my parents before   I started working. Immediately I started to work, he passed his role as bread winner to me.

“Our marriage had never known peace which often tells on my health.

“The last time we fought before  we parted ways, he beat me till I fainted. I was admitted in the hospital.

“He moved out of our apartment before I was discharged and left with  some of my property.

“I moved in with my mother when I was discharged from the hospital. I  have two of our children with me while the eldest is with my mother in-law.

“Since then, he has refused to ask after the children not to mention paying their school fees.

The defendant failed to appear in court after being served  court summon thrice.

Giving his judgment, the court president, Chief Ademola Odunade, dissolved their marriage and ordered the defendant to pay N10,000 monthly as the children’s feeding allowance.

He  was also ordered to be responsible for the children’s education and health care, and pay  the plaintiff N3,000 as fee for packing her luggage.
