A group, Human Rights Advancement, Development and Advocacy Centre (HURIDAC), has expressed commitment to empower and stimulate the youths interest in politics in order to deepen the country’s democracy.
HURIDAC, a West Africa Subregion human rights and environmental concern organization, stated this at the launch of the “Eye Project,” a one-day event which took place at the weekend in Lagos, and aimed at achieving the objective.
The event drew participants otherwise referred to as focal points participants from youths constituencies across Lagos State for training from institutions of learning such as the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Lagos State University (LASU), Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH), Nigerian Institute of Journalism (NIJ) and National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Lagos chapter.
Others were youth leaders from local government council areas, National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) and faith based organizations youth councils, among others.
The project is a collaboration between HURIDAC and Nigeria Women Trust Council with the support of MacArthur Foundation.
The Program Manager, Eye Project, Ms Mfon Enoidem, in her opening remark, welcomed participants to the event, saying that the project launch was to initiate them with its goals and vision which, according to her, ‘”is centered around increasing youth participation in politics, enable advocacy for transparent and accountable elections, holding politicians accountable for elections promises, showcase positive outcomes of youth participation in politics, combat voters apathy, among others.”
This was just as she disclosed that the focal points persons were chosen on merit, positing that it was expected that they would “also adopt that strict and diligent procedure in recruiting persons of similar pedigree to be ambassadors of the Eye Project in their various constituencies in order to drive up the youths participation in politics.”
Speaking further, Enoidem pointed out that the Eye Project would involve a series of training, workshops, seminars, among others to empower and stimulate the youths’ interest in politics across Lagos State over the next one year, countdown to the 2027 General Elections.
