Hunger protest: Jigawa govt suspends FG palliatives distribution in seven LGs

The Jigawa state commissioner of Information, youth, sports and culture, Sagir Musa has announced an indefinite suspension of seven local government areas from getting the Federal Government support and assistance.

The commissioner announced while addressing newsmen in government house Dutse, stating that the government’s decisions is a result of the affected local government areas’ roles and conducts during the last EndBadGovernance protests held nationwide.

Musa explained that the matter was discussed at the recent state executive council meeting and agreed on the action to suspend the distribution of the palliative at the seven local government areas until further notice.

According to him “The council has suspended the distribution of the palliative shops’ commodities in 7 LGAs (namely, Babura, Birnin Kudu, Gumel, Hadejia, Kazaure, Kirikasamma and Kiyawa) where government stores were vandalised during the protest incidents in some part of the state particularly at stores owned by JASCO, JARDA & SEMA respectively until further notice.

“The state executive council sympathised with the people of Jigawa State over the recent flood incident in some parts of the state.

“Jigawa state experienced flash flooding due to high velocity of rain fall in some local government areas. The areas affected are: Auyo, Buji, Birnin Kudu, Guri, Gwaram, Hadejia, Kafin Hausa, Kirikasamma, Ringim, and Taura LGAs.”

The commissioner stated that the government is taking all necessary measures to curtailed the situation by providing adequate working materials and embarked on actions to minimize the flood effect through pumping out storm water with hydro pump equipment in the effected settlement to reduce the risk.

“Already, the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has made effort to support the flood victims by providing adequate emergency relief items as part of rapid response mechanism by the government to provide immediate support to various communities.”

He noted that the state government had supported communal effort of sands bagging at critical places to addressed the devastating effect of flood that submerged houses and farmland in the communities.

Musa maintained that the SEMA also move the flood victims to a safer place with all needed support such as food and nonfood items as well as full medical attention and portable drinking water.

“In line with the Jigawa state government effort to address current economic hardships by subsidising food items and fertiliser to the poor, vulnerable and local farmers, the council approved the distribution of various commodities across the newly established palliative shops in the 27 LGAs.

“The council approved the closure of JASCO and JARDA stores in the above seven LGAs until when the government is satisfied with the safety of items to be delivered in the affected areas. Moreover, the council has approved the temporary closure of the vandalised state skills acquisition centers in Babura and Birnin Kudu.”
