Humanitarian Minister, IGP commiserate with Gov Bago over Niger tanker explosion

The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, and the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, have expressed their condolences to the Niger State Government and residents following the tragic tanker explosion at Dikko Junction, Gurara Local Government Area, on Saturday, January 18, 2025.

According to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the explosion claimed over 70 lives, injured 56 others, and destroyed several shops and properties.

In a statement issued by the Director of Information and Public Relations, Mrs. Rhoda Ishaku, Professor Yilwatda described the incident as “pathetic and unfortunate.” He prayed for the repose of the souls of the deceased and the quick recovery of the injured. The Minister also cautioned motorists against reckless driving and encouraged adherence to road safety measures, including regular vehicle maintenance.

Professor Yilwatda commended Governor Umaru Bago for his prompt visit to the scene and acknowledged the swift response by agencies such as the Niger State Emergency Management Agency, Fire Service, Federal Road Safety Corps, and the Nigeria Police in evacuating victims and managing the aftermath of the incident.

The IGP, in his statement, described the incident as a horrific tragedy that occurred when a truck carrying Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) lost control and caught fire, resulting in significant loss of life and property.

The IGP emphasised the importance of strict adherence to road safety protocols and directed State Commissioners of Police to strengthen their Motor Traffic Divisions (MTDs) in collaboration with other traffic management agencies. He urged vehicle owners and drivers to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy and to comply with traffic regulations to prevent such tragedies.
