How to take care of the vagina after delivery

Published by

Bringing a new life into the world is a joyous occasion, but it also comes with changes to a woman’s body, particularly her vagina’s health.

After delivery, it’s important for new moms to prioritise vaginal care to aid healing and prevent complications. Here are some essential tips on how women should take care of the vagina after delivery.

1. Practice Good Hygiene

Maintaining good hygiene is essential for promoting vaginal health after delivery. Be sure to gently wash the vaginal area with warm water and mild soap during your daily shower or bath.

Avoid using harsh chemicals, or fragrances as these can disrupt the natural pH balance of the vagina and increase the risk of infection.

2. Use Sitz Baths

Sitz baths, which involve soaking the pelvic area in warm water, can provide soothing relief and promote healing after delivery.

You can take sitz baths several times a day for about 10-15 minutes each time. Adding ingredients like salt can help reduce inflammation and discomfort.

3. Practice Proper Perineal Care

The perineum, the area between the vagina and anus, is often stretched or torn during childbirth. To aid healing and prevent infection, keep the perineal area clean and dry.

4. Use Ice Packs

Another way to take care of the vagina after delivery is by applying ice packs to the vaginal area can help reduce swelling and discomfort after delivery. Be sure to use a barrier, such as a cloth or towel, between the ice pack and your skin to prevent frostbite.

5. Practice Kegel Exercises

Kegel exercises can help strengthen the pelvic floor muscles, which may become weakened during pregnancy and childbirth.

These exercises involve squeezing and releasing the muscles used to control urination.

6. Attend Postpartum Check-ups

Regular postpartum check-ups with your healthcare provider are essential for monitoring your recovery and addressing any concerns or complications.

Be sure to attend all scheduled appointments and discuss any symptoms or issues you may be experiencing.

In conclusion, proper vaginal care after delivery is crucial for healing, preventing infection, and ensuring overall vaginal health.
