A 23-year-old armed robbery suspect, Godwin Emmanuel, has confessed to stealing a police officer’s phone while being transported to the Osun State Police Command in a patrol van.
Emmanuel was arrested alongside two other suspects, Olajide Kareem, 28, and Emmanuel Mike, 33, for allegedly robbing residents along the Ilesa-Osu Expressway.
According to the police, the suspects, part of a five-man gang operating out of Ikorodu, Lagos State, targeted motorists and passengers, stealing their belongings.
During one of their robberies, the gang shot a bus driver in the leg. The driver was taken to the Seventh-day Adventist Hospital in Ile-Ife for treatment.
Following this incident, Olajide was apprehended in a nearby bush and admitted to being part of the gang. The remaining two suspects, including Emmanuel, were later arrested.
In a surprising twist, Emmanuel confessed to stealing a phone belonging to a police officer during his transport to the station.
Speaking to journalists, he said, “I was arrested for armed robbery, and while in the police van, I took a phone. I didn’t realize it was a policeman’s phone. I wanted to use it to call my family because they didn’t know I had been arrested. I didn’t mean to cause trouble.”
Emmanuel revealed that he had hidden the phone for two months while in custody before the police discovered it during a search. “I am begging for forgiveness. I won’t do it again,” he pleaded.
The Osun State Police Command has reiterated its commitment to ensuring the suspects face justice, while efforts continue to track down the remaining members of the gang.
