How I’m blending tech and entertainment for social connection, impact —Opeyemi Olatunji, tech expert, entrepreneur

Published by

Opeyemi Olatunji a cybersecurity expert, entrepreneur, and social impact leader, recently launched an app called SocialCrib. In this interview by Kingsley Alumona, he speaks about his work, among other things.

Tell us about your early entrepreneurial journey and how you managed to do what you are currently doing.

I graduated top of my class, with a First-Class degree in Real Estate from the Federal University of Technology, Akure, followed by an MBA from Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, and two Master’s degrees in Information Technology and Cybersecurity from New England College, all with First Class.

I started in finance and real estate, working at Skye Bank, where I managed northern Nigeria’s credit portfolio and led special projects innovation before transitioning to the United States Embassy as a Housing Programme Assistant. My move into cybersecurity was driven by my passion for technology and risk management, leading me into roles at Deloitte USA and Nu Skin Enterprises, where I specialise in security automation and engineering, and currently managing global security operations protecting over five million clients across over 50 countries.

What inspired your current career path, and what is the most rewarding part of your work?

My journey has been shaped by my desire to solve problems and create meaningful change. Whether in finance, tech security, or entrepreneurship, my goal has always been to innovate, improve systems, and empower people.

Seeing the direct impact of my efforts, whether it is protecting millions of global clients in cybersecurity, mentoring young talents, or helping communities through my non-governmental organisation (NGO), TIGL Initiatives, are all rewarding for me.

What does a typical day look like for you?

A typical day involves overseeing security operations, strategising cyber risk defences, and leading automation initiatives at Nu Skin. Outside of work, I mentor aspiring tech professionals, manage JM MiSa International, and work on TIGL Records and SocialCrib.

Tell us about your work in tech and entertainment, and the impact they have in society.

I am deeply passionate about music and social innovation. I founded TIGL Records and Studio, a music label supporting Nigerian artists; and launched SocialCrib, an audio-first social networking app designed to foster authentic connections and reduce depression and suicide tendencies among the youths. At Nu Skin, I have introduced security automation, enhancing global cyber risk mitigation. At Skye Bank, I led special projects innovation, improving internal financial processes. My entrepreneurial ventures — SocialCrib and TIGL Records — blend tech and entertainment for social impact.

For the impact my work and endeavours have on society, I want to open doors for people, helping them recognise the hidden opportunities in technology, entrepreneurship, and creativity. Through mentorship, scholarships, and innovative solutions, my goal is to empower individuals and drive sustainable progress in Nigeria and beyond.

What challenges do you face in your career, and how do you stay ahead in the industries you work?

Breaking into new industries has always been a challenge. Moving from finance to cybersecurity, managing multiple businesses, and constantly adapting to technological changes have required resilience and continuous learning.

Staying ahead in the industries I work, I prioritise continuous learning and adaptation. Cybersecurity, fintech, and entertainment evolve rapidly. So, I earn certifications like CISSP, stay engaged with global tech conferences, and immerse myself in industry research. To stay ahead, some values drive my work and decisions. These values include integrity, innovation, and empowerment. I believe that knowledge should be shared, businesses should solve problems, and impact should be measurable.

What are you currently working on, and where do you see yourself in five years?

I am developing a fintech product poised to revolutionise financial offerings in Nigeria, expanding TIGL Initiatives to support more families, and scaling SocialCrib to create a global hub for authentic connections. I am focused on building transformative businesses by scaling my impact, whether through cybersecurity innovation, social networking, fintech solutions, or mentoring future leaders,

In five years, I see myself leading tech-driven enterprises, shaping Nigeria’s digital finance and social networking sectors, and driving education and innovation programmes that empower thousands of individuals globally.

What is the best advice you have ever received? If you could go back and advise your younger self, what would you say?

The best advice I have ever received was “Never stop learning, and never stop adapting.” Industries evolve, and staying ahead requires continuous education and reinvention.

If I were to advise my younger self, it would be: “Explore beyond your comfort zone sooner.” Every major opportunity came from taking risks, expanding networks, and embracing growth mindsets.

What is your advice to someone trying to follow in your footsteps?

Be proactive. Do not wait for opportunities—create them. Invest in skills, networking, and mentorship. Finally, stay resilient through challenges.
