Nigerian singer and songwriter, Chukwuka Ekweani, popularly known as CKay, has claimed to be the pioneer of the vibes of Afrobeat that many artists in Nigeria thrive on today.
The ‘Love Nwantiti’ crooner made this assertion in a post on his verified X account on Wednesday.
According to CKay, his influence in music has impacted not only fans but also fellow artists who have embraced and expanded upon the Afrobeat trends he helped popularise.
He stated that his ‘Emo Afrobeat’ innovation paved the way for many of today’s Afrobeat artists, a fact he believes cannot be rewritten.
CKay also refuted the rumour that some of his songs were written by other artists and producers, emphasising that he writes all his own songs.
He tweeted, “History can’t be rewritten just because some people got paid to rewrite it… I’ll always be here to remind you.
“CKay IS the first. I pioneered many vibes Afrobeat artists thrive on today… iykyk. Y’all laughed when I came up with emo Afrobeat and was on TikTok all day, but many are now doing the same thing, calling it ridiculous names (& making $$). You’re welcome, sha 😎.
“Every CKay song out there was written by CKay. I also produced/co-produced a good number (except ‘DTF’ written by Talksiick). Any artist or producer who claims they wrote my song is a LIAR.”
