How I nearly got suspended for revealing senators’ allowances in 2018 — Shehu Sani

Former Kaduna senator, Shehu Sani, has disclosed that he narrowly avoided a six-month suspension from the Senate in 2018 after revealing details of federal lawmakers’ salaries and allowances.

In a post on X on Thursday, Sani credited then-Senate President Bukola Saraki and his deputy, Ike Ekweremadu, for preventing the disciplinary action against him.

“When I publicly disclosed the salaries and allowances of the senators, it nearly earned me a six-month suspension if not for divine intervention, Saraki and Ekweremadu’s immediate rescue,” he wrote.

Sani had sparked controversy in March 2018 when he revealed that senators received N13.5 million monthly as running costs, in addition to N200 million designated for constituency projects. The disclosure, which shed light on lawmakers’ typically undisclosed earnings, drew criticism from many of his colleagues.

His statement comes amid the recent suspension of Kogi Central senator, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who was handed a six-month ban by the Senate. The decision followed a report by the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions, which investigated her February 20 confrontation with Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

On February 28, Akpoti-Uduaghan alleged during an interview on Arise TV that her issues in the Senate began after she rejected what she described as inappropriate advances from Akpabio.
