How govt officials spend lavishly while Nigeria is broke — Afenifere chieftain

Segun Sanni, Afenifere’s Chief Economist, has explained how government officials spend lavishly while Nigeria is broke.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Wednesday, Sanni criticised the administration led by President Bola Tinubu for its lavish expenditures.

He slammed the Nigerian government for its extravagant spending despite the country’s dire financial situation.

Sanni highlighted how government officials are enjoying significant perks while the nation struggles with insolvency.

He pointed out the incongruity between the government’s opulent spending, such as ₦90 billion on hajj, ₦21 billion for a new vice president’s residence, and ₦40.6 billion for Aso Rock renovations, and the economic hardships faced by Nigerians.

The government cannot claim Nigeria is broke while spending so extravagantly, urging for urgent cost-cutting measures and greater financial transparency.

He said, “We are spending lavishly, a government that is spending lavishly and living large cannot tell Nigerians that Nigeria is broke. We are indeed broke but our government is not using our resources on itself as if we are indeed broke.

“Spending 90 billion on hajj, 21 billion on a new vice president’s lodge, 40.6 billion in this year’s budget to renovate Aso Rock and the rest of it we hear. We hear all these scandalous figures being mentioned but how much of it is being spent on the people.”
