How FG can prevent future attacks on correctional centres

OF late, correctional centres have been coming under attacks by bandits, terrorists and gunmen. Such attacks became more common during the EndSARS protests of 2020, when several correctional centres were attacked and inmates set free.

This year alone, there have been attacks on correctional centres in Jos, Kabba and recently, Oyo, where several inmates were set free.

The effect of a prison break is enormous as those set free are criminals who simply return to the society to continue their criminal acts, and this is the major reason the Federal Government, through the Ministry of Interior, which manages the nation’s correctional centres, must work towards ensuring that attacks on correctional centres are curbed.

The most important step the government can take is to better equip armed guards at the correctional centres, while other conventional security personnel like the police, army, Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), among others, are posted to correctional centres.

Also, closed circuit television (CCTV) should be installed at correctional centres as this will enable security personnel monitor happenings around correctional facilities, and in the event of an attack, investigators will be able to study such attacks with a view to identifying the perpetrators and arresting them.

Local vigilantes should also be partnered with  in order to gather intelligence of strange movements around correctional facilities, especially at odd hours.
