How data can be used to tackle social, economic issues — Analyst

Leading Nigerian data analyst Chioma Susan Nwaimo says she’s dedicated to using data analytics to solve pressing social and economic issues.

With her expertise, she is addressing challenges in various sectors, including healthcare, education, and agriculture, demonstrating how data can drive meaningful change.

Chioma Susan Nwaimo, a distinguished Nigerian data analyst, has been making significant strides in her field in the United States.

Her expertise in business intelligence (BI) and data analysis has allowed her to generate actionable insights through advanced data-driven methods. Nwaimo’s proficiency spans various technical tools, including Microsoft Excel, Power BI, PostgreSQL, R, Tableau, AWS Quicksight, and Python.

Nwaimo’s journey began with a Bachelor’s degree in Estate Management from the Federal University of Technology Akure, Nigeria, in April 2014. Reflecting on her educational background, she said, “This foundational knowledge in managing properties and estates gave me a unique perspective on data and analytics.”

She further enhanced her analytical skills by obtaining a Master of Science in Applied Statistics & Decision Analytics from Western Illinois University, where she graduated with a perfect CGPA of 4.00 in July 2022.

Currently, Nwaimo serves as a Senior Data Science Analyst at Discover Financial Services.

“I conduct fair lending statistical analysis using regression models to identify potential bias and discrimination in credit decisions,” she explained.

Her role according to her, involves providing actionable insights to senior management, enabling data-driven decision-making in credit strategy development.

Additionally, she implements automated reporting solutions using Python and GitHub and develops interactive dashboards for monitoring fair lending metrics.

Her previous role at Welltower Inc. as a Business Intelligence Analyst involved analyzing demographics and psychographics of the healthcare landscape.

“I provided continuous measurement and feedback for the seniors and wellness housing portfolio, ensuring data-driven enhancements in business performance,” Nwaimo said.

She integrated information from various sources to develop insights that improved operational strategies and business outcomes.

At Amazon Services LLC, Nwaimo worked as a Business Intelligence Engineer.

“I was responsible for framing queries using AWS Redshift to extract relevant data on the MyHR website and built interactive dashboards using AWS Quicksight to report metrics on the website’s success and adoption,” she recounted. This role required delivering actionable insights to senior managers during business reviews.

Nwaimo’s skill set includes proficiency in various tools such as Microsoft Excel, Power BI, PostgreSQL, R, Tableau, AWS Quicksight, AWS Redshift, Python, Alteryx, Snowflake, SAS, and GitHub.

“These skills allow me to perform complex data analysis, develop insightful visualizations, and create automated reporting solutions that drive business efficiency and effectiveness,” she noted.

Her professional certifications include Microsoft Certified: Power BI Data Analyst Associate, AWS Certified Big Data, Alteryx Designer Core Certification, Tableau Desktop Analyst, and IBM Data Analyst Professional Certificate. “These certifications demonstrate my commitment to continuous learning and staying current with industry advancements,” she stated.

Nwaimo is also a member of several professional organizations, including the National Society of Black Engineers, The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, and the Association of Data Scientists, among others.

“These memberships provide valuable networking opportunities and keep me informed about the latest trends and best practices in data science,” she highlighted.

In addition to her professional achievements, Nwaimo is committed to giving back to the community. “I have volunteered as a National Climate Fellow for Change the Chamber, participated in Discover Volunteer Events, and been a member of the Orange Health Initiative,” she shared. Her contributions have allowed her to apply her skills for social good and support important causes.

Throughout her career, Nwaimo has received several awards and scholarships, including the Western Illinois University Graduate Assistantship Scholarship, Talent Award, and WEOG Award. “These recognitions are a testament to my dedication and hard work,” she acknowledged.

Addressing aspiring professionals, especially those from Nigeria and other parts of Africa, Nwaimo encouraged, “My journey demonstrates that with dedication, continuous learning, and leveraging opportunities, you can achieve great success. Pursue your dreams relentlessly and contribute your unique talents to the global stage.”

Nwaimo also believes that data analytics can play a crucial role in addressing Nigeria’s challenges. “For example, in healthcare, data analytics can help in tracking disease outbreaks, optimizing resource allocation, and improving patient outcomes through predictive analytics,” she explained.

Highlighting a specific area where data could significantly impact Nigeria’s development, she stated, “In agriculture, data analytics can optimize crop yields, monitor soil health, and predict weather patterns to ensure better farming practices. This can lead to increased food production, reduced waste, and improved food security for the nation.”
