How breaking up with my girlfriend inspired my career — Layi Wasabi

Published by

Nigerian comedian and content creator, Isaac Olayiwola, popularly known as Layi Wasabi, has shared how a breakup with his girlfriend motivated him to take his career more seriously.

Speaking at a recent event about the pivotal moment in his life, Layi revealed that before the breakup, he would create funny videos but only share them with his friends.

However, after the relationship ended, he recounted how he experienced a newfound sense of freedom and determination to pursue his passion with more focus.

He explained that the breakup led him to start sharing his content more widely, which ultimately marked the beginning of his professional breakthrough.

He said, “I would do some funny videos, I wouldn’t share it with people. But I would show it to my friends. So when things ended with this particular person because I wasn’t showing seriousness with my life. I didn’t have anything to lose, I started to spam you people. I started to drop content on a daily basis and as God would have it I had my first viral video, I had my second viral video, I had my third viral video, then she called me. That was the journey. It was something I was passionate about and I worked towards it relentlessly.”

Layi, who began his content creation and comedy career professionally in 2017, won the award for Best Content Creator at the 2024 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards. He has also starred in films such as Anikulapo and Adire, among others.
