The Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, Hon. Yusuf Abdullahi Ata, has cautioned the presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in the 2023 election, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, against making inflammatory statements capable of creating tension.
It will be recalled that Dr Kwankwaso raised concerns over President Bola Tinubu’s perceived preference for Lagos State over other states in the federation.
Dr. Kwankwaso, while delivering a speech during the convocation ceremony of Skyline University, Kano, alleged that Lagos has been involved in issues surrounding the emirate tussle in Kano State. He claimed there were plans from Lagos to “colonize” the northern region.
In response, the Minister of State for Housing, in a statement issued by his media aide, Adamu Aminu, on Monday, warned that Kwankwaso’s remarks could have far-reaching consequences, potentially escalating tensions in the polity.
According to the minister, Dr Kwankwaso should be mindful that the issue of the Kano emirate is still pending in court, and his recent comments could be perceived as contempt of court.
Alhaji Ata urged the former governor and leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement to reflect on the potential impact of his words and instead promote constructive dialogue.
“As leaders, we must prioritise national unity and avoid inflammatory rhetoric that can exacerbate tensions,” the minister stated.
He emphasised that “by promoting calm and respectful discourse, we can work together towards a more harmonious and prosperous future for all Nigerians.”
Dr Kwankwaso, however, accused Lagos of attempting to dominate other states, particularly Kano, due to the overwhelming support it receives from the central government. He also alleged that Lagos was meddling in Kano’s internal affairs, including the selection of its emir.
