Household poverty, others militate against girl child education ― UNICEF

The United Nations Children Education Fund (UNICEF) has identified household poverty and child labour as some of the factors responsible for the setback being recorded in Girl-Child education in some parts of the country.

Mr Muntaka Muktar, Field Officer, UNICEF, said this on Tuesday in Kano at a Media Dialogue on School-based management committees organised by the Fund.

Muktar also mentioned residence or school location as well as low parental literacy as other factors purely responsible for the lower status of girl child education.

“Pursuit of material wealth by youth as well as limited employment opportunities for school leavers also contribute toward a decrease of child enrollment, ” he said.

He said that already the fund had reached out to religious leaders, traditional leaders and other stakeholders in sensitising parents to the need to allow their children to acquire western education alongside Qur’anic education.

The field officer said that the approach would encourage parents to send their children to school to acquire education.

He said that education was the only legacy any responsible governments and parents could bequeath to the future generations.
