A non-government organisation under the auspices of the Home Economic Teachers Association (HETA) said on Wednesday that improved teaching of the Home Economics subject in schools would go a long way in solving the unemployment crisis in Nigeria.
Speaking in Abuja, the President of HETA, Abuja chapter, Mrs Rifkatu Lami Yisa, explained that the subject offers training targeted at making the young students self-reliant after school.
“Today when we talk, we are talking about self-reliance because home economics offers skills that would help one become self-sufficient economically.
“Skills in pastries that would even enable secondary school leavers to sponsor themselves in tertiary institutions are well captured, as are training in the textile industry”.
She stated that students of home economics are taught how to make liquid soap, other toiletries, and disinfectants that are essential for home use.
The President said that with the variety of training the subject offers, students of the course are instilled with the ability to be self-reliant, even employers of labour in some cases.
Yisa, however, lamented over the drastic drop amongst students in taking home economics as a subject at the secondary school level.
She called on the government and parents to encourage young people to learn a skill and become financially independent at an early age.
The president also refuted claims that the subject was only for girls. “Today I have seen people that are having eateries that are men like the KFC Venture.
“So today, parents who encouraged the fear of saying home economics is very expensive to study in school are not telling the truth.
“We can always improvise in home economics; if you have practicals, students can at least bring a few things and gain knowledge that will stand the test of time,” she stated.
