HIV/AIDS prevalence: Adamawa youths urged to stay negative, live positive

The need to curb the spread of HIV/AIDS has again been stressed as the Adamawa State Ministry of Youth and Sports in conjunction with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), organised a one-day sensitisation and free testing for young people in tertiary institutions on the danger of HIV/AIDS in the state..

The sensitisation program which took place at the College of Legal Study in Yola, on Saturday, had students of the institution in attendance.

Provost of the College, Barrister Suleiman Ahamed thanked the Ministry for choosing the institution, stressing that this sensitisation on the prevalence of HIV/AIDS, particularly among the young ones will help in making them stay negative and live positive in pursuit of their dreams.

Earlier, the commissioner of youth and sports, Bar. Waking Yakubu said youth development is crucial to the overall development of the state.

He said, “This is why the state governor has dedicated a lot of funds to build the stadium for youth development, noting that this development can only be achieved when you the youths stay healthy.”

The commissioner, represented by the Director of youths in the ministry, Mr Mike Ngula, said the ministry will continue to partner with groups and organisations to develop the youths.

He commended the UNFPA for the sensitisation program and the need to stay healthy through healthy behaviours.

Executive Director, Today 4 Tomorrow, Miss Abei Bassey, who spoke on behalf of the UNFPA said the choice of tertiary institutions is because the HIV/AIDS PREVALENCE rate is higher among youths of tertiary institutions.

“With this sensitisation here today and the awareness created, more than half of the people now know that their destinies are in their own hands.

“The way they live their lives today determines their tomorrow.”

Over three hundred people attended the program.
