Hilda Afeku Amenyo: Transforming financial services across Africa through innovation

Hilda Afeku Amenyo is recognized as a transformative leader whose influence reaches far beyond Ghana, reshaping the financial services landscape across diverse African markets.

With a distinguished career in banking, insurance, and community finance, Hilda has spearheaded initiatives that drive innovation, foster inclusive growth, and promote economic resilience throughout the continent. One of Hilda’s groundbreaking initiatives is the introduction of digital credit scoring models for underserved populations. These models use alternative data sources to assess creditworthiness, enabling financial institutions to extend credit to individuals and small businesses that lack traditional credit histories. This innovation has been implemented by several banks and microfinance institutions across Africa, enhancing access to credit and fostering economic growth.

Hilda’s influence extends into insurance, where she has pioneered transformative initiatives in bancassurance and risk management. “Insurance is pivotal for mitigating financial risks and promoting stability,” she emphasizes. One of her groundbreaking initiatives includes launching mobile-based insurance products that cater to underserved populations in rural areas. These products, designed for affordability and accessibility, have been adopted by insurance markets in neighboring countries, catalyzing market growth and expanding insurance penetration across Africa.

Another significant initiative is Hilda’s development of a comprehensive risk assessment framework for SMEs. This framework, which incorporates both qualitative and quantitative measures, has been adopted by insurance companies and financial institutions across the continent. It has enabled better risk management and tailored insurance products for SMEs, enhancing their resilience and growth potential.

During pivotal industry challenges, such as regulatory reforms and economic crises, Hilda’s leadership has been pivotal in guiding organizations towards sustainable growth and operational excellence. “Strategic foresight and agility are crucial in navigating complex market dynamics,” she reflects. Her proactive strategies in regulatory compliance and risk management have not only ensured organizational resilience but have also influenced regulatory frameworks across Africa, promoting consistency and investor confidence.

Currently, Hilda’s research at Montclair State University delves into using municipal green bonds to fund the clean energy transition at the local government level. Focusing on the critical need for investments in low-carbon infrastructure and renewable energy sources, her research aims to facilitate the shift to a low-carbon economy at the local government level, using New Jersey as a base case. This work underscores the importance of sustainable financing solutions in achieving environmental and economic goals.

Looking ahead, Hilda plans to establish a green consulting firm that will provide expert guidance on sustainable finance and renewable energy projects. “Our journey towards inclusive growth requires bold innovation and collective action,” she asserts. Through her leadership and unwavering dedication, Hilda Afeku Amenyo continues to shape the future of finance across Africa, inspiring industry stakeholders and paving the way for a more inclusive and resilient financial services landscape continent-wide.
