Justice Moshood Ishola of the Oyo State High Court sitting at Ringroad, Ibadan has fixed November 12, 2024, to hear an application of Stay of Execution, filed by the University of Ibadan, the International School Ibadan (ISI), the Principal and the UI Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic, against the judgment of the Oyo State High Court granting female Muslims the right to wear hijab over their school uniform in International School Ibadan, the Management of the school.
At the resumed hearing of the matter on Wednesday, counsel to the claimants asked for the leave of court to withdraw a pending application which was dated April 24, 2024, and filed on May 27, 2024.
And since the parties had no objections, the court struck out the motion. He thereafter asked to move another Motion on Notice dated July 19 which was just served on parties on Wednesday morning.
He therefore asked for a date to allow claimant respondents to file their replies to the application.
Justice Ishola consequently adjourned the matter with advice to parties that they should be civil, maintain peace, and seek paths of amicable resolution as provided in the judgment.
It will be recalled that the management of the school had in 2018 banned female Muslim students from wearing hijab on their uniforms. The development prompted the students through their parents to approach the court for the enforcement of their fundamental rights.
On Wednesday, May 23, 2024, the court declared that the decision of the management of International School Ibadan (ISI), owned by the University of Ibadan (UI), preventing female Muslim students from wearing hijab on their uniform was unconstitutional and illegal.
