High Society mourns famous publisher, Joop Berkhout

Published by

The Nigerian literary and publishing community is mourning the loss of Chief Joop Berkhout, a distinguished publisher who passed away a few days ago in Ibadan.

Born on March 31, 1930, in Amsterdam, Netherlands, Berkhout made Nigeria his home for nearly six decades, significantly influencing the nation’s educational and literary landscapes.

Berkhout’s journey in Africa began in Tanzania, where he worked with Oxford University Press. He later moved to Nigeria in 1966 to serve as the pioneering General Manager of Evans Brothers Limited. In 1978, he co-founded Spectrum Books Limited, further cementing his legacy in the Nigerian publishing industry. Even after retiring in 2008, his passion for literature led him to establish Safari Books Limited in 1991, which continued to impact Nigerian education and literature.

Honoured with the title, Okunborode of Ile-Ife, Berkhout throughout his career was known for his visionary approach, believing that Africa offered vast opportunities. He once remarked that “Africa was very exciting and had more opportunities,” a sentiment that guided his decision to settle in Nigeria and contribute to its publishing sector.

As the nation reflects on his legacy, Chief Joop Berkhout is remembered not only for his professional achievements but also for his deep commitment to Nigeria’s cultural and educational advancement. His life’s work has left an indelible mark on the country’s literary heritage.
