High cost of borehole drilling may limit Nigerians’ access to hygienic water — Expert

An expert in water technology and co-founder of the Global Initiative for Nigeria Development (GIND), Michael Ale, has raised the alarm over the high cost of borehole drilling in the country, saying such development may hamper Nigerians’ access to hygienic water.

Ale, who attributed the current free fall of the Naira currency as the cause for the exorbitant cost of drilling boreholes, charged President Bola Tinubu to put in place effective measures that can shore up the value of the nation’s legal tender in the international market.

In a press statement forwarded to the Nigerian Tribune on Sunday, he said borehole is the most affordable and accessible source of clean underground water for the masses, stressing that no effort should be spared to provide potable water for the citizenry.

Ale, who is the president of the Association of Water Well Drilling Rig Owners and Practitioners (AWDROP), also charged the newly appointed Minister of Water Resources, Mr Joseph Utsve, to utilise his experience and expertise in making drinkable water available to the people and preventing water-borne diseases.

The statement read: “Water from boreholes comes straight from the ground, making it 100 per cent fresh and natural, unlike mains water, which is actually 60 per cent recycled wastewater.

At this critical time, the government needs to provide solutions to avoid imminent waterborne diseases and other contagious diseases among the Nigerian populace.

“Boreholes allow businesses to thrive, as a lot of companies, such as farms, need water to grow plants and take care of livestock, which makes a borehole installation a much more affordable option in the long run.

“Government at all levels should consider palliatives for Nigerian drillers in terms of support for their businesses at this critical time in order to augment the cost of borehole drilling for domestic and industrial consumption or for all-season farming.”
