Hibreed discusses the impact of storytelling on Afro-fusion

As the music industry is constantly evolving, it is no secret that artists who must remain seen
and relevant must also keep up with the changes. On the forefront of these adaptations is none
other than the Lagos-based Shonukan Babatunde, popularly known as Hibreed. With over three
years of experience in incorporating trends while answering the need for inspiration and genuine
connections that music lovers need, Hibreed shares his secret: the power of storytelling.

In this exclusive interview, he shares his perspective on how valuable storytelling is in the music
industry. “My storytelling is deeply personal, often reflecting real-life experiences, emotions, and
growth, which allows me to connect with my audience on a deeper level.” He explains, “I draw
from my Nigerian roots while incorporating elements from different cultures and genres I’ve
encountered throughout my travels.”

He further discussed how storytelling has the power to connect people, to make them feel seen
and heard, and for Hibreed, it’s about creating a sense of community through his music. Hibreed
believes a loyal fan base is built when the artist shares relatable emotions and experiences,
creating a connection with their audience. “Whether it’s joy, pain, or reflection, each song is an
expression of what I’ve lived through, allowing listeners to connect with genuine emotions and
stories.”

Reflecting on the turning point of his career, Hibreed recalls how he only wanted to share his
story and experiences with the world, but then he discovered that that was all he needed to
make people love his music. Now, with this innovative approach to storytelling, Hibreed is
pushing the boundaries of what Afro-Fusion can be. He anticipates a future where the genre is
more than just a sound – it’s a movement.

Hibreed believes flexibility and learning are essential for staying true to oneself in the
ever-changing industry. “I’ve stayed relevant and adapted to changes in the music industry by
staying true to my sound while embracing new trends and technologies.” He shares, “I
constantly evolve by listening to different genres, collaborating with other artists, and using social media platforms to engage with my audience. I also keep up with industry shifts, like the

rise of streaming services and digital marketing, to ensure my music reaches a wider audience.”
As Hibreed’s music continues to inspire and uplift listeners, one thing is clear – the story of
Afro-Fusion is far from over. As for upcoming afro-fusion artists, Hibreed advises them to focus
on promoting positive messages, fostering community through shared experiences, and
leveraging social media to stay updated on industry trends.
