Google’s email platform Gmail has debunked shutting down its operations, after a fake message about the end of the service went viral.
“Gmail is here to stay,” the service said on Thursday in a statement posted on it’s verified X handle.
Earlier, a fake email appearing to originate from Gmail claimed that the platform was reaching the end of its service in August 2024.
In September, Google said that Gmail will no longer allow users to display the platform in Basic HTML view starting in January 2024.
The fake image emerged after Google’s generative artificial intelligence (AI) model Gemini received criticism for producing historically inaccurate depictions of people.
On Thursday, Google suspended Gemini’s ability to generate images of people until they release an improved version of the AI model.
