Hepatitis: Group screens IDPs appeals for support

The Guild of Medical Directors Wives Association has appealed for support, including scholarship, for children in the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP’s) Camp in Kuchigoro, in the FCT.

Mrs Queen Philips made the appeal during the presentation of food items and free screening for Hepatitis for the IDP’s, on Sunday in Abuja.

“Hepatitis is a silent killer which many are not aware of, because a lot of them do not have knowledge of it.”

“Our members want to impact positively on the larger society that is what motivated us to come to the IDP camp.

“It is also an opportunity to offer free medical screening to these people which is the topic for the 24th Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference of the Guild scheduled for May 27, in Abuja.

Philips said follow up would be available for those that are positive with Hepatitis as they would be given referral letters to the hospital of guild members.

She however called on well-meaning Nigerians to partner with them to sponsor children in the IDP to school in order to impact positively on their lives.

She said the aim and objectives of their organisation include fostering the bound of friendship unity in community by reaching out to the less privileged.

The Chairman Local Organising Committee of the Guild, Dr Wisdom Ihejieto said the visit to the IDP was a step towards achieving the forthcoming conference of about 150 to 200 medical directors from 6 geo-political zones.

The President of the Guild of Medical Directors, Dr Tony Philips said the association had addressed the issues of health since its inception.

He added that there was need to advocate and sensitise Nigerians on the killer disease known as Hepatitis, adding that it kills faster than HIV and AIDS.

The Chairman of Kuchigoro IDP, Mr Philip Emmanuel appreciated the good gestures of the guild.

He appeal to the government to come to the aid of those in the camp “as many were dying in the camp due to hunger and sickness.”

The Women wing of the association started in 2013 with the aim of addressing the prevailing health challenges in the communities.
