The Ministry of Health and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Cross River State have strengthened their collaboration to address drug and substance abuse in the state.
During a courtesy visit by NDLEA delegation in Calabar, the state’s Commissioner for Health, Dr. Henry Egbe Ayuk emphasised the necessity of the partnership due to the increasing rate of drug abuse, particularly among the youth.
He assured the agency of support from the administration of Governor Bassey Otu, especially in relation to policy implementation in health services.
Ayuk also requested a concept note from the NDLEA detailing the agency’s expectations from the government and restated the administration’s dedication to combating drug abuse and other issues threatening the moral fabric of society.
He praised the NDLEA’s drug reduction department for its initiatives aimed at raising awareness about illegal drug use in the state.
NDLEA’s Deputy Commander of Narcotics, Mrs. Nandi Ada, echoed the importance of collaboration with the health ministry and mentioned that a letter had been sent to the ministry to include nominees in the drug control committee.
She noted the previously slow progress of the committee’s operations and highlighted the need to revitalise it to enhance the fight against drug abuse in the state.
“The alarming rate of drug abuse in Cross River State is evident from recent reports by the NDLEA. Consequently, the agency is working diligently to mitigate this issue through awareness campaigns in schools and media channels,” she said.
Mrs. Ada further expressed concerns regarding the lack of rehabilitation centres in the state and the urgent necessity to establish one or more such facilities.
