The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has reiterated the importance of the scheme to national development, saying that many residents in rural areas depend on corps members to have access to quality health care services.
The coordinator of NYSC in Ekiti State , Mrs Mary Chikezie who stated this while speaking at the weekend during a ceremony marking the 48th anniversary of the scheme by the 2021 Batch A, Stream 2 of corps members at the permanent orientation camp, Emure-Ekiti, in Emure local government area, added that the nation cannot afford to stop the scheme at the moment.

Speaking on the contributions of the scheme since creation in 1973, the state coordinator noted that it has brought development across all sectors to the country and also foster unity among different ethnic groups.
According to her, “NYSC scheme has brought development to Nigeria in different areas of life, since its establishment. Right now, the scheme is the hope of the rural dwellers even in the remotest communities in Nigeria to accessing health care services.
“Corps members under the scheme are posted to these communities and they have been contributing meaningfully to impact lives of the host communities.
“NYSC has been building bridges of unity and friendship in Nigeria.The only hope to building our nation’s youths for self-reliance now is NYSC, take away the scheme, our youths hope is dashed.”
Chikezie urged the corps members to be good ambassador of the scheme and contribute their own quotas to the development of Nigeria.
Discussants, which included, Marvelous Chukwuma, Jonathan Chukwuma, Akinola Adeyeye and Joseph Umboro (all corps members) threw their weights behind the scheme and called on the federal government to strengthen and enhance the scheme in contributing to the nation’s growth.
