Headies Awards is coming back to Nigeria — Ayo Animashaun

In response to mounting criticism, Ayo Animashaun, founder of the prestigious Headies Award, has announced a significant shift in the event’s location, opting to hold the ceremony within Nigeria’s borders once again.

The decision to relocate the renowned music awards ceremony to the United States sparked widespread controversy and backlash.

However, Animashaun has now yielded to pressure, acknowledging the importance of bringing the event back home to its roots.

Defending the initial decision to host the Headies in the US, Animashaun emphasised the global impact of Nigerian music, citing its exponential growth and influence on the international stage.

He highlighted the remarkable achievements of Nigerian artists, whose songs have garnered billions of streams and secured top spots on global music charts.

Despite these achievements, the decision to host the Headies abroad drew criticism from various quarters, prompting Animashaun to reconsider.

In an official statement, he underscored the significance of honouring Nigeria’s rich musical heritage by holding the event within the country.

The return of the Headies Awards to Nigeria signifies a homecoming for the celebrated ceremony, which has played a pivotal role in recognising and promoting Nigerian music talents over the years.

As preparations for the 2024 edition unfold, anticipation builds for a memorable celebration of the vibrant music culture that has captivated audiences worldwide.

“This year, 2024, we are bringing the world back home: to the place that birthed the sound that has led everyone to the dancefloor, that has launched viral videos, and that has put our continent right at the centre of global pop culture,” he said.
