He sleeps, loafs around in the neighbourhood while I go to work, woman tells court

A woman, Omoyeni Afolorunso has dragged her husband, Gbenga Afolorunso before Ile Tuntun Customary Court, Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State.

Omoyeni  who accused her husband of constant battery and neglect, prayed the court to dissolve their 3-year-old marriage and grant her custody of the only child in their wedlock.

Gbenga agreed to divorce but refused that his wife should have their child.

Omoyeni stated before the court that:”My husband is irresponsible and unreliable. He has failed as a husband and father. All he knows to do is to beat me.

“He dotted on me while we were courting, but changed immediately we got married and I became pregnant.

“He provided no food not to mention clothing. He didn’t provide nor contributed a dime towards my pre-natal and ante-natal care.

“I borrowed money to run a business but I eventually spent it on our baby’s care. I was the one who bought our baby’s items before delivery and was also responsible for the medical expenses after I put to bed.

“I took up a job few months after delivery in order not to die of starvation. My lord, immediately I resumed work, my husband stopped working. He will still be in bed when I’m leaving home in the morning while I will meet him playing games with neighbours or loafing about in the neighbourhood on my return.

“I’m tired of his constant beatings. He beats me any time I complain about his irresponsible act.

“I’ve had enough of him,  please separate us, “the plaintiff concluded.

“My lord, in our home, my wife is the husband while I’m the wife. She lords it over me every now and then.

“She’s hard to please. Rather than appreciate all that I do in the home, she goes about denting my image.

“My lord, she can leave if she so pleases, but I pray the court to award me custody of our child because she can’t take care of her, “Gbenga stated.

Ruling, the court president, Chief Olasunkanmi Agbaje adjourned the case till July 19 and asked both parties to come with their child and parents for judgment.
