Ile Tuntun Customary Court, Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State has adjourned till January 23, the judgment on the divorce suit brought before it by a woman, Taiwo Adeosun against her husband, Olusola Aremu.
Taiwo had prayed the court to abort the twenty-year-old marriage between her and her husband on the accounts of irresponsibility, neglect and abandonment by the latter.
In addition to this, she appealed that the custody of their three children be granted her.
Olusola did not accede to divorce.
“My lord, I’ve come for divorce because my husband dumped and deserted me when I needed him most, “Taiwo told the court.
“He’s irresponsible and always abandoned his duties in the home. I carry out the roles of both parents because he had tactfully passed them to me.
“I took ill and instead of attending to my medical needs, he dumped me at my parents’ place and abandoned me there.
“My brother took me to the hospital and solely bore the responsibility of my medical attention. He never showed up for once throughout the time I was on admission. He neglected me and didn’t care if I lived or not.
“I was transferred to another hospital on the course of my treatment but this was unknown to him. To cover up his shortcomings he told those who came to check on me in the first hospital I had been discharged, “she added.
“I moved to my brother’s house after being discharged since it was obvious he was no longer interested in my welfare.
“Few weeks later, I travelled down to my twin sister’s place at Benin to recuperate.
“My Lord, he started calling me at Benin that he wanted to bring our children to me. He complained he was finding it a task feeding and caring for them. I warned him not to call me again. To my chagrin, he brought the children down to Benin and I sent them back to him after a while.
“I later learnt he drove our first child out of the house for refusing to comply with his order pick up a job at a certain place.
“My lord, please separate us and restrain him from calling me on phone or disturbing me at my workplace, she stated.
“I’m not ready to divorce my wife, “Olusola told the court.
“She lied that I didn’t take care of her. I not only did my best to make her happy, I also took good care of her mother who was living with us.
“We started experiencing a strain in our relationship shortly before she took ill and this eventually led to her decision to leave me.
“My lord, the major reason for the misunderstanding between us is money, “the defendant stated.
“My wife is a sickle cell patient and I have been responsible for her medical treatment which is always bulky sum anytime she was ill. The last time she fell sick I had nothing on me because my business has nose-dived.
“I approached my mother in-law for financial assistance and she appealed to my brother in-law to help me.
“He did. My family members and friends also contributed towards her treatment. Seeing that her condition still required further medical assistance, I went as far as borrowing money from her boss to meet the need.
“Her medical bill was N27,000 when she was discharged and my brother gave N10, 000 out of this.
“Before she was discharged, I called her on phone to ask after her health but her line was not reachable. I later sent her N5, 000 and fruits through our daughter after she was discharged and had moved to her brother’s house.
“My lord, she went to her twin’s place in Benin and was there for weeks without my consent.
“I have never failed in taking care of our children. I arranged that they spent some time with her in Benin because they had all missed her. And when leaving, they went with sufficient food to sustain them there.”
After he had listened to both parties, the court president, Chief Olasunkanmi Agbaje stated that more evidence would be needed before judgment was given.
He, therefore, adjourned the case till January 23, and ordered the duo to come with their children and parents.
