Apparently disturbed by the number of houses involved, Executive Director, Housing Development Advocacy Network (HDAN), Festus Adebayo, has called on the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, to reconsider the ongoing demolition of housing estates in Abuja.
According to him, such demolition amounted to colossal waste amid harsh economic situation.
Rather than total demolition, Adebayo said he preferred confiscation and repurposing approach, which would see properties redirected towards essential housing needs.
He analysed the economic impact of demolishing such valuable assets, noting that the demolition of the entire estates would constitute a colossal waste for the country that has over 22 million units of housing deficit.
He proposed alternative strategies that would retain and repurpose such buildings for societal benefit.
“Rather than tearing down these estates, we should consider transforming them into workforce housing estates,” he said.
According to him, the ongoing demolition of estates would harm developers and homeowners and could dampen real estate investment in the FCT.
