Hauwa Liman’s execution: FG must wake up

Published by

THE outrage that greeted the announcement of the killing of another aid worker, Hauwa Liman, by a faction of Boko Haram has not abated. Sadly enough, the Federal Government has only reacted in a manner that showed clearly that it was yet to arrest the pangs meted on the country by religious fundamentalism and extremism perpetrated by Boko Haram.

Many lives have been lost and many family ties broken. We have seen the devastation that the proscribed group has visited on many communities in the North. The effects of this are far-reaching. Yet, we appear to be trapped by the helplessness of a failed and failing government. Liman’s death is a painful commentary of how a country should not toy with the issue of terrorism.

In the northern part of Nigeria today, many children have become orphans. Many husbands have lost their wives; wives have become widows; schools have been shut down; whole communities destroyed. It will take that part of the country a long while to recover from the damage caused it. We will all recall that Nigeria is yet to recover from the losses of the civil war. Nigeria’s South East is yet to recover from the catastrophe of the civil war.

It is not enough for President Buhari to put a call through to Liman’s father in order to condole him. The Federal Government and all the agencies burdened with security of the nation should wake up and do the needful. We are not satisfied with the killings going on all over the country. The globe is watching our reaction to this and the sincerity of our commitment.
