Hacey to donate birthing kits to expectant mothers in Oyo, Ogun, Osun

A Non Governmental Organisation, Hacey Health Initiative with the support of Access Corporation is set to introduce ‘Agbebi’ a safe motherhood programme designed to reduce pregnancy-related complications and deaths in three states of the country.

This was disclosed by the Communication officer of Hacey Anne Bassey, during an interactive with newsmen in Kaduna on Monday.

Bassey noted that “Nigeria is currently grappling with the challenge of maternal mortality with the World Health Organization estimating a concerning Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) of 512 deaths per 100,000 live births.

“This sad reality underscores the urgent need for action to address the underlying factors contributing to poor maternal health outcomes in Nigeria.

According to her, “Thankfully, HACEY Health Initiative, a Non-Governmental Organization, is stepping up to the plate with Project Agbebi, a safe motherhood program designed to reduce pregnancy-related complications and deaths.

“With about a month of implementation in Osun, Oyo, and Ogun states, the project aims to provide safe and essential birthing kits, educate and equip pregnant women, and create communal support systems for pregnant women, all in a bid to improve maternal health outcomes in these states.

She said the provision of birthing kits to pregnant women across Primary Health facilities in the three states is a significant step forward that will improve safe deliveries and potentially reduce complications during childbirth, which, in turn, will positively affect maternal and neonatal outcomes.

In her own remarks, the executive director of HACEY, Rhoda Robinson, emphasized the importance of addressing the underlying factors contributing to poor maternal and neonatal health outcomes.

She stated the need for access to quality healthcare services and health education and awareness for pregnant women and communities.

Head of Sustainability at Access Corporation, Omobolanle Victor-Laniyan echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the need to promote skilled birth attendance during childbirth, encouraging pregnant women to seek antenatal care, and strengthening the healthcare system itself.
