GUNMEN suspected to be cultists have reportedly killed four young men in the Ilorin metropolis, Kwara State in alleged rival cult clashes.
It was gathered that the violent confrontation started on Thursday and spread till Friday evening at Ikokoro, Osere, and Babooko areas of the metropolis.
One of the victims, simply identified as ‘Abbey’ was reportedly shot dead around Ikokoro area, off Niger road, in Ilorin on Thursday.
The unidentified gunmen, believed to be of a rival cult group, stormed the area at about 2.45 p.m. and went straight to the apartment of the victim and murdered him.
The victim was said to have been a member of another notorious cult syndicate.
While some residents stayed indoors during a fierce gunfight that ended Abbey’s life, shop owners hurriedly locked up their shops to avoid being caught in the crossfire.
A resident, who pleaded anonymity, said the area and its immediate environs became deserted immediately the fracas began.
It is recalled that a similar incident occurred in the area in 2016, where a suspected cult member, Wasiu Adanri, was murdered.
Speaking on the development, Police Public Relations Officer, Ajayi Okasanmi, confirmed that only one life was lost in the latest clash.
He also said that no arrest had been made, adding that the command was on the trail of the suspects.
Also, the police command has warned members of the public to submit unlicensed fire arms and ammunition in their possession to the nearest police station, saying “any person or persons arrested with unlicensed fire arms would be dealt with according to the law.”
The command also directed all vigilante security organisation operating in the state to report to the DPO of their communities for authentication and briefing on how to carry out their assignments.
It also reminded the general public that the laws regarding possession and control of fire arms and ammunition was still in force, adding that, categories of fire arms to be possessed by individuals, is for gaming and strictly with license issued by the IGP.
“The commissioner of police with the consent of the governor of the state may by order prohibit the possession or control of fire arms without the license of an authority as specified above,” it said.
