No fewer than five people were killed, and many others injured in the early hours of Monday in the troubled Mangu local area of Plateau, following an invasion by gunmen suspected to be bandits.
Recall that the local government area has been under siege by bandits in recent times, leading to the deaths of over 300 people, mostly women and children.
This unfortunate incident forced the Commander of Operation Safe Haven (OPSH), who is also the General Officer Commanding 3 Armoured Division, to relocate his operational base to the local government area.
A source close to the council revealed that the bandits, in large numbers, swooped on Nchya Village, Mangu District, of Mangu Local Government at about 1:00 am, shooting sporadically into the air to announce their arrival.
It was learned that in the course of the devilish operation, five people were killed, and many others injured. The bandits also set houses on fire before they fled away.
The Nigerian Tribune gathered that the incident later caused apprehension and pandemonium at about 8:00 a.m. on Monday when the corpses of those killed were conveyed to the local government Headquarters.
A mass protest ensued as residents of Mangu trooped out in large numbers to protest against the killings, while business activities were paralyzed until the intervention of men of Operation Safe Haven, who dispersed the aggrieved protesters by shooting into the air.
However, the Spokesman of the Plateau State Police Command, DSP Alfred Alabo, could not be reached through his phone at the time of filling out this report.
