Gunmen kill 10 people in Benue

Published by

Unknown gunmen killed no fewer than ten people at Ukoosaa-Atam community in Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State on Monday.

According to locals in the area, some unidentified gunmen who rode motorcycles invaded the village and shot sporadically at people on Keke napep, motorcycles, and those in their homes.

At the end of the attack, ten corpses were recovered.

One of the locals who did not want his name mentioned said, “Some local bandits on Monday rode to Ukoosa-Atam, a kilometre after Ayati town, headquarters of Borikyo council ward, Ukum LGA.

“The gunmen came and attacked a Keke napep, killing all the passengers and the driver. The gunmen rode on motorcycles and were shooting indiscriminately, and they also attacked the surrounding houses in the village.

“This is one of several attacks on the community.

The locals, however, called on both the state and federal governments to provide security in Ukum LGA.

“Let the state and federal governments provide security because there is no single security in this area, and we also appeal to the government to assist those whose houses have been destroyed,” they said.

When contacted by the Police Public Relations Officer for the State Command, Catherine Anene said she was out of town.

Meanwhile, the State Security Adviser, Joseph Har, said that the government was aware of the situation in Ukum LGA, adding that the administration of Governor Hyacinth Alia was doing everything possible to restore peace in the troubled LG and all over the state.

Har said, “The government is working seriously to tackle the security challenges in the state, particularly in the Sankera axis (nay, Ukum LGA). We are going to use a carrot and stick approach.”
