Gunmen invade APC rally in Nnewi, kill one, injure others

Gunmen on Sunday evening invade a rally of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Uruagu, Nnewi, Anambra State, killed one person injured many others.

The APC State Chapter that confirmed the incident in a statement signed by its Chairman, Chief Basil Ejidike, the Secretary, Chukwuma Agufugo, and the Assistant State Publicity Secretary, Barrister Chukwunoso Chinwuba and made available to Tribune Online, in Awka, on Monday, says the evening attack has led to the cold death of a committed, Mr Somadina Oforma and the hospitalisation of many others including a female.

“Our great party regrets the invasion of our party office and attack of members who were gathered for a meeting in Uruagu Ward 3, Nnewi by persons yet unidentified.

“We regret the loss and regard it as one violence too many in an Anambra State that ought to be the safest state in Nigeria if official claims were anything to go by.

“The statement read in part; On Sunday, 26th September, 2021 at about 5.15 pm, we received the shocking news of an attack on APC members in Uruagu ward three (3), Nnewi North LGA during their official ward meeting by some gunmen.

“In the process, one Somadina Oforma, a vibrant member of our Party was shot dead while another member, a female sustained a serious gunshot injury on her leg. She is presently receiving treatment while the deceased has been deposited in the mortuary.

“This ugly event is coming barely two weeks after the murder of late former traditional ruler of Mkpu Nando, Igwe Alex Edoziuno in cold blood. This killing is one too many!

“APC, Anambra State Chapter strongly condemns these attacks and views any such attack on citizens, who go about their legitimate businesses as senseless and retrogressive.

“Meanwhile, the wanton attack on citizens of the State has exposed the cluelessness and inability of Chief Obiano’s administration to discharge its fundamental responsibility of safeguarding the lives and properties of Anambrarians.

“APC is worried and concerned about the safety of its members and indeed, citizens of Anambra and urges Chief Obiano as the Chief Security Officer of the State to do the needful to safeguard the lives and well-being of Anambra people.

“The Party also calls on the police and other security agencies to be proactive about security matters in the State; and admonishes APC members never to succumb to intimidation but to remain steadfast, committed and work tirelessly to ensure that the clueless APGA administration is uprooted through democratic means, come November 6.

“Finally, the Party uses this opportunity to condole with the relatives and friends of the deceased while wishing those who sustained injuries quick recovery. The death of Somadina Oforma and other committed patriots will obviously not be in vain!

Confirming the attack in a statement, the State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ikenga Tochukwu, said the State Commissioner of Police, CP Tony Olofu has ordered an investigation into a shooting incident.

He said the incident happened at Uruagu Community, Nnewi on 26/09/2021.

According to him, a Preliminary investigation reveals the attackers at about 7 pm on 26/09/2021, along Uruagu Community started shooting sporadically. Two persons who sustained gunshot injuries were taken to the hospital. One of the victims who was later identified as Somudina Oforma was confirmed dead by the doctor on duty while the other is receiving treatment in the hospital.

“Further details shall be communicated please,” he noted.
