GSM @20: NCC, NITDA, others bag awards as stakeholders call for synergy in ICT

Stakeholders in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector have called for more synergy in the growth of digital infrastructure and literacy in the country.

This was as the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) bagged awards for the Premier African Regulator at the 20th anniversary held at NAF Conference Centre, Abuja, to mark two decades of GSM recently.

Other industry operators were also honoured with awards including the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), who bagged the award for Distinguished Promoter of Innovation and Government to Citizens Services.

Galaxy Backbone (GBB) won the Best Government to Government eServices Provider, while the Integrated Internet Solutions, HD Technologies Ltd., among others also received awards.

The stakeholders, who spoke on the theme: “20 Years Digital Revolution Powdered by GSM” at the Awards and Gala celebrations said telecommunications technology had brought significant changes to the country.

The event, organised by DIGIVATION, awarded both public and private institutions for their  contributions to the growth and expansion of Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) revolution as the country embraced the Fifth Generation (5G) Technologies.

The Executive Vice-Chairman, NCC, Professor Umar Garba Danbatta, who was represented by Head, Online Media and Special Publications, NCC, Dr Omoniyi Ibietan, thanked the stakeholders in the sector and the organisers of the event for its achievements.

Danbatta called on stakeholders to strive and sensitise members of the public to take advantage of ICT and its benefits to the economic growth of the country.

“Two decades after, we are going into the Fifth Generation revolution.

“We need to come together to sensitise the public to the advantage of digital technology and the benefits it holds for them,” the EVC said.

Meanwhile, President, High Tech for Women and Youths, Dr Wunmi Hassan, called for the study of impact of GSM on women in Nigeria.

Hassan noted that if every woman had mobile phones, they could also acquire digital literacy and bring their businesses to the digital world.

“It is critical for us to demystify the digital space between women and men in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) as technologists,” she said.

Another panelist, Dr Niran Oyekale, stated that “although, we have evolved, but we still have a long way to go.

“I want to see the human development in Nigeria align with the world to bridge the digital gap.”
