Ile Tuntun Customary Court, Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, listened to a divorce suit brought before it by one Abdullai Adepoju against his wife, Kafayat Adepoju.
Abdullai in his suit alleged that Kafayat was stubborn, daring, uncaring and was always provoking him. He, therefore, prayed the court to dissolve their 13-year-old marriage and grant him custody of their four children.
“My wife was loving and submissive early in our marriage, but she suddenly changed and started challenging my authority in the home.
“When I say a word, she answers me with two. She flouts my orders and doesn’t listen to my counsel or heed my instructions.
“She has grown wings and now dares me when we are arguing or quarrelling, “he stated.
“My wife now cares less about what happens to me and our children. She has failed in her duty as a home keeper. She doesn’t care if we eat or not. She’s also not bothered if the children are well groomed. She goes out without my permission and stays out as long as she likes.
“When we were seeking admission for our first child into the secondary school, I discussed with her where I felt he should stay since our home is far from the school. I told her my brother’s place would be a comfortable place to stay and she agreed.
“He finally got admission and I paid N70,000 as school fee. But when he resumed classes and was to move to my brother’s place, my wife, to my surprise, objected to it. So our son was going to school from home which was not convenient for him.
“We sat down and talked it over and she agreed that he stayed with my brother starting from the second term.. But when it was time for school to resume, she disagreed again and withdrew the child from the school and took him to another.
“I told her she was going to leave my house and she threatened that if she leaves, I would die.
“I had an accident after this and broke my leg and was on admission for more than a month. My wife visited me only once. Her excuse was that she didn’t have money for transport fare. But she had money to go to her shop.
“Even when she came, she stole N7,000 under my pillow while I was sleeping.
“I was on crutches after being discharged from the hospital and, therefore, asked our second child who was on holiday to stay with me at home, but my wife refused and insisted he must go to shop with her.
“My lord, if a woman who calls herself my wife can be this heartless,. I believe the best thing is that we part ways, “he said.
The defendant rejected her husband’s plea for divorce stating that she was still interested in their marriage.
“He’s a loving husband and cares for me and our children.
“When I received the court summon, I ran to my in-laws, the eldest of husband’s siblings in particular. She promised to speak with my husband and pacify him, but when she called him, his phone was switched off.”
“Please, help me beg him, “she appealed to the court.
The court president, Chief Agbaje Olasunkanmi, after listening to the couple, stated that the evidence given by their parents would shed more light on the case.
He, therefore, adjourned the case till March 10 and ordered that the duo come along with their parents and children.
