A civil society group, Organisation for Global Youth Peace Empowerment and Development Initiative (OGYPEDI), has urged the National Assembly to apologise to Nigerians for continued delay in passing the 2017 Budget.
The group made the call in a statement signed by its South-West Secretary, Mr Seriki Ayowale, in Benin on Monday.
President Muhammadu Buhari presented the 2017 Appropriation Bill of N3.30 trillion to the national assembly on Dec. 14, 2016.
As at Monday, the lawmakers were yet to approve the budget, in spite of the expiration of the 12-month span of the 2016 Budget, on Friday. The Bill was signed into law by Buhari on May 5, 2016.
The group accused the lawmakers of playing politics of vendetta by abandoning the Appropriation Bill which could address the economic challenges facing the country.
“They should know that Nigerians are suffering hardship as a result of the economic downturn and people are committing suicide as a result of that.
”Nigerians, who are working cannot feed their families, so we need to rise up as a nation to change things rather than dreaming of it,” the statement said.
According to the group, if the 2017 Budget is not passed in time by the legislature, it will further increase the suffering of the people.
