A non-government organisation, Eyiowu Awi Health Initiative (EAHI), in collaboration with Mustard Seed Unilab Educational Consult Reunion Committee, recently organised a free medical screening for the people of Ososami and Imalefalafia area in Ibadan South-West Local Government Area of Oyo State.
Speaking on the programme, the founder of EAHI, Mr Olasubomi Adelaja, said the NGO was aimed at meeting the needs of the underprivileged by providing free healthcare services to the people in the communities, including those in rural areas.
Adelaja, a 500 level student of medicine and surgery at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, said: “Our aim is to provide free medical service to children and adults with adequate data collection for proper follow-up.
“We also educate the people on the various preventive measures that can taken against infectious and non-infectious diseases that are on the rise in the communities. We also ensure that some essential drugs are distributed to the people while some are referred to appropriate quarters for proper medical attention.”
He said over 200 people had undergone tests for HIV/AIDS, hypertension, diabetes, while the medical expert carried out tooth extraction, scaling and polishing. More than 100 children were de-wormed.
In his comments, one Adedoyin, a 62-year-old retired teacher said: “This is the first time I will attend such an open medical outreach. I was able to consult the doctor, who listened to my complains, educated me on diet modification and gave me drugs for free.”
Another beneficiary, Madam Awayeola, said she had been having serious toothache and was asked to pay N15,000 to get the aching teeth extracted.
She, however, added that the two were extracted by the dentist in the outreach at no cost.
While commending the organizer of the programme, a 30-year-old businesswoman, Madam Folarin, said she thought the programme was organised by a politician because of its magnitude. “I was amazed when I discovered that the programme was put in place by a medical student.” Our governments should, at this junction, wake up from their slumber and provide the necessary amenities to the people they govern.”
