The Northern Professionals for Development and Unity (NOPDU) on Friday, 17 January, threw its weight behind former Sokoto State Governor Alhaji Attahiru Bafarawa for his decision to resign from active partisan politics.
This group saw the top Sokoto political figure’s decision as a strategic step to concentrate on promoting unity and development in the northern region.
According to Dr Rabiu Aliyu Dambatta, the Chairman of the group, NOPDU’s statement is a testament to the organisation’s support for Bafarawa’s vision of a united and focused northern region.
The group believes that Bafarawa’s resignation would pave the way for effective leadership and mentoring, ultimately benefiting the people of the north.
NOPDU commends Bafarawa for taking the lead in promoting northern unity and urges other political leaders in the region to follow suit.
The group emphasises that the North’s unity and progress should not be compromised for political gain.
Instead, they advocate for equal justice and policies that benefit the people of the North.
“No matter what anybody may think about this elder statesman’s decision to resign from partisan politics, it is a commendable action to see how he can garner support to reposition the North.
“His presentation of the way forward for the north, 22 years ago, is an overwhelming response for sure remedy that is needed to secure our unity and cohesion as a people.
“That blueprint was a pacesetter for the realignment and ensuring our regional unity, cohesion, peace and understanding.
“We affirm that our unity and progress must never be negotiable for any political purposes. Rather, all those who have benefitted from the North must be ready and sincere enough to confront the monsters of insecurity, underdevelopment, poverty, and out-of-school children, among others, working against the North.
“While congratulating Bafarawa for this bold step towards efforts and selfless service to humanity, we urge him to look for credible sons and daughters of the region, including those in government, for robust steps towards addressing our many challenges,” he said.
Bafarawa announced his resignation from the major opposition party in Nigeria in a letter he personally signed and addressed to the National Chairman of the party, Amb Iliya Damagum.
