Group hails reappointment of CBN governor for 2nd term

A coalition of civil society organisations has hailed the reappointment of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Dr Godwin Emefiele, by President Muhammadu Buhari for the second term in office.

The coalition under the auspices of All Civil Society Groups with millions of members across the country also condemned the sudden emergence of an audio tape of an alleged conversation involving the CBN Governor.

Speaking at a news conference jointly addressed by the National President of the group, Mr Etuk Bassey Williams, and the Secretary, Alhaji Ibrahim Abubakar, the coalition described as blackmail and desperate attempt to discredit Emefiele, “who has given his best for the nation.”

Williams said the attempt to blackmail the CBN governor shortly after his name was forwarded by the President to the Senate for confirmation was done in bad faith.

He said the audio alleging misappropriation of funds came in bad taste, as the efforts of the CBN governor and his management to see Nigeria through the recent economic recession is still a testimony and rubbishes every allegation in the tape.

He said: “We wonder why such tape would be released when President Muhammadu Buhari just affirm the reappointment of the governor for another tenure.”

He added that Nigerians must learn to appreciate good efforts of individuals like the CBN Governor saying this pull-down syndrome that has become the bane of good work must be jettison if the country is to move forward.

The group said President Buhari has silence distractors with the tenure extension due to his giant strides having brought the country out of recession with the economy on the steady growth.

Williams said: “We have listened to the audio and can actually state that the conversation had nothing to do with anything fraudulent as purported.

“Nigerians should disregard the antics of these enemies of progress who always believe that they must destroy or discredit credible activities of government once things do not go their ways.

“We want to assure the management of CBN that Nigerians are behind them, and should not be distracted by few that never seek the good of the nation.
