Govt, missions can partner to save schools from disintegration —Abegunrin

THE Catholic Archbishop of Ibadan Archdiocese, His Grace, Most Revd Dr Gabriel Leke Abegunrin, has called on state governments, missions and well meaning individuals to work together and save Nigeria’s education from further disintegration.

Abegunrin made the call while giving his remarks at the second annual convention of the Old Students Association of Our Lady of Apostles Secondary Grammar School, Maryway (OLAMIOSA), Ibadan, held at the Nustream Events Centre, Ibadan.

The two-day celebration started with the association’s reunion with several sets of alumni gathering on the school’s premises to celebrate with students.

The event was attended by the wife of the immediate past governor of Oyo State, Chief Mrs Florence Ajimobi, among other prominent old students of the school both home and abroad.

He said: “On your plan that schools must be returned to their owners, it’s not the ownership that matters really, but the level of education of our country that is the problem. If government had been doing its work well, we wouldn’t have had to worry at all.

“In Rwanda, people are now leaving private schools for public schools because the president has turned the schools to high level schools. I think the government should do the same here in Nigeria. Let government just shore up the standard of education in public schools and let all our children return to public schools.

“We can work with the government and turn our schools to the best in education. We can be partners in progress on matters of education. That’s what we really love.

“But if they can’t do it, let the government return them (the schools) and we’ll do it.” Abegunrin noted.

In her address, the chairperson, OLAMIOSA Board of Trustees, Mrs Franscisca Fehintola Taiwo, commended all the old girls for their donations and selfless service towards the school

The national president of the association, Pastor Mrs Valentina Titilayo Solarin, acknowledged the commitment of every member to all projects.
