THE Federal Government has embarked on the promotion and sensitisation of clean and new technology for proper industrial waste management and disposal in the country.
Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Science and Technology, Mr. BitrusBakoNabasu, said this became imperative in order to ensure clean, better environment and to protect the ecosystem.
He spoke in Abuja while delivering his speech at a workshop themed: “Promotion of clean technologies for management of toxic metals from leather and petrochemical industries in Nigeria.”
Nabasu highlighted the use of fentonoxidation technology to be used by the Federal Government in achieving clean waste disposal.

“The fentonoxidation technology to be used under this project is an environmentally clean technology that minimises the generation of secondary waste, it is cost effective, requires minimal energy and reduces environmental pollution”, he added.
He further said that the Federal Government would consider popularising to Small and Medium Scale Industries on the need of the fentonoxidation technology if expected results were achieved as a result of a proposed pilot strategy.
He decried the prevailing methods of waste management and disposal, which he described as being detrimental to people’s health and hazardous to the environment and the ecosystem and the need for the government to promote clean waste management and disposal.
Earlier, the acting Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of Leather and Science Technology (NILEST), Dr. EuchariaOkpara, said that the institute had developed technologies to effectively manage waste from leather industries/ tanneries and the technology would be well developed to be well used around the country.
The Director of Chemical Technology department in the ministry, Mr. AkinyemiOyefeso, said the Federal Government was focused on the use of fenton oxidation technology in effective waste management on leather and chemical industries and if the project was successful, other industrial sectors would be included.
