The Governor of Nasarawa State, Abdullahi Sule has commended a leading rice company, Olam Rice Farm for contributing to the education development in the state with the donation of block of classrooms to LEA primary school in Zegeyo area of the state.
Governor Sule, while commissioning the building during a one-day working visit to Olam rice facility in Rukubi, commended the company for its numerous social responsibility projects in the state which have impacted positively on the people.
The governor also praised the company for contributing significantly to human capital development in the state which he said is a key focus of his administration.
Speaking, the head of the company in Nigeria, Anil Nair, said the donation was part of the corporate social responsibility of the company to improve the life of people in the host communities, especially the children.
Nair assured the governor that Olam, ” is committed to a strong and sustainable long term relationship with her host communities and other interested parties through its public relations programmes and activities that foster understanding and peaceful coexistence with the host communities and other stakeholders.”
Apart from the building donated to the primary school in Zegeyo, he also mentioned some of the corporate social responsibility projects of the company that have a direct positive impact on the host communities.
According to him, “The projects include construction and rehabilitation of rural roads, construction of classrooms for schools, employment of teachers, payment of scholarships and provision of relief materials for flood victims. These are in addition to a seed breeding facility, under construction, targeted at providing high yielding seeds adaptable to local conditions which will benefit the company and the community to have higher yields.”
In line with the company’s local content policy, Nair said 80 percent of over 2000 employees on the payroll of the company are from the host state even as more indigenes, through in-house training facilitated by the company, have now taken over a substantial part of the jobs hitherto reserved for expatriates.
He, however, informed Governor Sule and his entourage that, ” the company is facing some serious challenges that are militating the sustainable growth of the company.”
The biggest of the challenges, he said, is the road from Doma to Akpanaja which was included in the 2021 budget of the state, appealing to the governor to help with the construction of the road within the shortest possible time.
The governor and his entourage were taken around key areas of the company which include the mill, farm and workshop.
Those on the Governor’s entourage included the deputy governor, Emmanuel Akobe, SSG, Muhammad Aliyu, some permanent secretaries, traditional rulers and a host of others.
Meanwhile, the company is currently expanding its milling facilities which are expected to process about 240,000MT of rice paddy per annum as against the present capacity of 120,000MT thus making it the largest rice mill in the country.
The expansion, when completed, is expected to contribute 90,000MT of milled rice to the domestic market.
